Iconic Houston Burger Chain Prince’s Is Making a Comeback

Iconic Houston Burger Chain Prince’s Is Making a Comeback https://houston.eater.com/2020/10/1/21497092/houston-princes-hamburgers-reopening-sharpstown-park-golf-course a juicy bacon cheeseburger, flaky onion rings and fried on a white plate Prince’s icon hamburgers and onion rings have returned to Houston. | Prince’s Hamburgers/Facebook

The longtime burger destination has found a new home in the Sharpstown Park Golf Course clubhouse

Prince’s, the iconic Houston hamburger chain that closed its last location after Hurricane Harvey, is back.

The restaurant, which served Houstonians for more than 80 years before shuttering, has opened a new location inside the clubhouse at the Sharpstown Park Golf Course, ABC13 reports. The location is being run by Prince’s longtime owner John Broussard.

Prince’s was first founded in Dallas in 1929. In 1934, founder Doug Prince expanded to Houston, with a restaurant on Main Street. The chain quickly expanded to 18 locations, many of them close to high schools and colleges, like the one at Cullen Boulevard and I45, near the University of Houston. The restaurants became popular hangouts, where students would socialize and show off their cars.

Prince’s is often credited with popularizing the drive-thru in Texas. Their juicy burgers, fried shrimp baskets, crispy onion rings and chocolate shakes didn’t hurt either. In 2015, Eater named Prince’s one of Houston’s most iconic burgers.

Posted by Prince's Hamburgers on Thursday, June 22, 2017

In the 1970s, John Broussard was working for a meat wholesaler, and the original Prince’s on Main was one of his customers, he told ABC13. Then-owner Elizabeth Flores was about to close up shop, but he convinced her to go into business with him, and that iteration of Prince’s operated with a handful of locations until 1990. In 1993 Broussard decided to reopen the chain, starting with a restaurant on the Katy Freeway. After a few more expansions and contractions, the final Prince’s, at 3425 Ella Boulevard, closed in 2017 due to Hurricane Harvey.

At the time, Broussard told the Houston Chronicle that the restaurant was just taking a short break, and would be back soon.

The new location, at 6600 Harbor Town Drive, opened quietly a few months ago. It’s currently the only Houston location, but Broussard told ABC13 it stays true to the original. “I don’t want to change it. I’ve never changed the recipe — I’ve only changed the price,” Broussard told ABC13. “And I wish I didn’t have to do that but I don’t think I could make it selling burgers for 10 cents anymore.”

Like many old-fashioned burger places, the interior of the new Prince’s is steeped in nostalgia, documenting the company’s long history in Houston. The restaurant has even brought back some of the old traditions — every first Sunday, from 9 a.m. to noon, the plan is for patrons to gather for a casual car show.

Anne Cuthbert MA, LPC, LMHC | Food Is Not The Enemy Eating Disorders Counselor

http://foodisnottheenemy.com/

Anne Cuthbert MA, LPC, LMHC | Food Is Not The Enemy Eating Disorders Counselor
My Approach
Anne Cuthbert MA, LPC, LMHC
Owner and Practitioner of “Food Is Not The Enemy Counseling”

Anne Cuthbert is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington. She holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Antioch University, Santa Barbara, CA. Anne specializes in working with those with eating disorders and negative body image.

Anne’s counseling experience spans over 20 years and has included studying and working with experts in the eating disorder field, teaching counseling and communication skills classes, and assisting and managing several personal growth seminars and support groups. In addition to being an eating disorder specialist, Anne has provided counseling to people with a variety of relationship issues and early traumas, including adults who were abused as children.

As a therapist, I will help you discover how to:

Eat and enjoy the foods you really love, without worrying about gaining weight Accept and even like your body
Find and maintain your healthy weight naturally through uncovering the underlying causes for your behaviors
Focus on and improve your relationships by helping you move away from blaming food and your body
Learn to like yourself, your whole self
As a counselor, I go beyond traditional talk therapy to help you to learn healthier coping skills around food, your body, and your life in general. I use a counseling approach that will help you address the root causes of your problems around food.

Through therapy, you can end the cycle of using food and hating your body to cope with your emotional needs.

In counseling, I’ll help you make step-by-step changes that will help you overcome your problems around food and help you feel good about your body. Food issues and having a poor body image are symptoms of deeper needs that need to be met.

In order to make permanent changes you need to get to the root of the problem and find healthier ways to meet your needs. In the end, counseling will help you overcome your problems with food and how you feel about your body.

Overall, you will develop a richer and more satisfying life.

I am an acting board member of CREDN, Columbia River Eating Disorders Network. ASDAH member, Association of Size Diversity and Health, Internal Policy Committee, Membership Committee and Conference Planning Committee (co-chair).

I know first hand what it is like to deal with food and body issues. For years, I struggled with food issues and hating my body. I compared myself to every woman I saw and resisted exercising refusing to give into what other people told me I should do and how I should look. I ate to hide how I was feeling and to avoid being close to anyone. I thought I couldn’t be loved if I was fat.

Now, I am pleased to say all that has changed for the better. I no longer use food to cope. I feel good about myself, my body, and my life. I am now passionate about helping others recover as well. I love that my job as a counselor is helping you to eat whatever you want and feel good about it.

Along with my personal and professional experience with eating disorders, I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Washington. I hold a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Antioch University, Santa Barbara, CA.

My counseling experience spans over 16 years and has included studying and working with experts in the eating disorder field, teaching counseling and communication skills classes, and assisting and managing several personal growth seminars and support groups. I have provided counseling to people with a variety of relationship issues, including adults who were abused as children.

I look forward to working with you. -Anne

Election 2020: The Montana Governor’s Race

Election 2020: The Montana Governor’s Race https://legal-planet.org/2020/10/01/election-2020-the-montana-governors-race/

Last week, I posted about the Montana Senate race. Montana also has a tight race for governor. The candidates are the current Democratic Lieutenant Governor Mike Coney and House Republican Greg Gianforte. Coney is a long-time figure in state politics.

Gianforte founded a “customer relationship software company.”  He got national attention in 2017 when he assaulted a reporter and knocked him down. Gianforte pled guilty, did community service, apologized, and donated $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists. The two have starkly different environmental views.

Mike Cooney (D).  According to his website, “Mike Cooney knows climate change is real and knows it’s going to take all of us to make a meaningful difference. He’s committed to bringing everyone to the table . . .  to ensure they are protected from further negative impacts of a changing climate.” He views to carry on the legacy of the outgoing governor, who joined the U.S. Climate Alliance. The website also reports that “Mike has a proven record–and 100% rating from Montana Conservation Voters–of protecting our natural heritage and securing access to our public lands for all Montanans.”

Greg Gianforte (R) Gianforte has a 5% score for his 2019 votes from the League of Conservation Voters, and a 3% lifetime score. Those scores on the low side for a Republican, especially the 2019 score because there was some environmentally related legislation that 2019 that attracted significant GOP support.

One of the issue tabs on Gianforte’s website is “Standing with Trump,” which gives you a sense of his general political stance. He has said that human activities are one contributing factor to climate change but opposes regulation or a carbon tax. He was opposed to the Paris Agreement.

Gianforte’s  “Montana Comeback Plan” says Montana is called the “Treasure State” because of its coal, oil, minerals and timber, which he wants to exploit more fully.  He calls for streamlining the permit process, cutting regulation, putting more development-friendly leadership in environmental agencies — and yet, somehow, at the same time he will preserve Montana’s environment.  Gainforte’s plan does not contain a single mention of renewable energy.

  • * * *

Montana is a major coal producer, but gets about half of its own power from hydro and wind. It has a lot of unused wind potential, and the next Governor may shape how much the state invests in that versus trying to protect its coal industry.

Is clinical depression a severe disease? | TMS Serivces of Vancouver

Yes. The National Institute of Mental Health and wellness preserves that, "Depressive ailment can usually hinder normal working and also trigger discomfort as well as enduring not only to those who have the problem, however to those who appreciate them. Severe depression can ruin domesticity along with the life of the unwell person." A nationwide study of anxiety discovered that nearly all the participants that reported a major depressive problem likewise reported that their social and/or work lives were negatively influenced by their disease.1 In 2010, the economic concern of clinical depression was estimated at $210 billion in the US2 as well as clinical depression was the second leading root cause of handicap, accounting for virtually 20% of all years of life shed to special needs and sudden death.3 Anxiety can also be a deadly disease. Yearly in the United States, over 30,000 individuals pass away by suicide, 60% of whom suffer from clinical depression.

Christine Ha’s New Vietnamese Restaurant, Xin Chao, Is Now Open

The Masterchef winner’s first standalone restaurant is a partnership with Saigon House’s Tony J. Nguyen

Xin Chao, the hotly-anticipated, new restaurant from Masterchef winner and Houstonian Christine Ha, is now open near the Washington Corridor.

Ha has teamed up with Tony J. Nugyen — chef at the beloved Saigon House, known for spicy “H-town Bang” crawfish and brisket pho — to open the restaurant in the former Beaver’s digs at 2310 Decatur. The restaurant opened quietly last week.

Ha started gaining accolades in Houston and beyond in 2012, after winning first place in season three of the Fox cooking show Masterchef. In 2018, she opened her first restaurant, The Blind Goat, inside Bravery Chef Hall in Downtown.

Ha’s partner Nguyen first opened Saigon House in Midtown, gaining fame for Viet-Cajun staples like saucy, spicy crawfish and SLAB Ricer, a dish of shrimp, fried rice and sausage. Saigon House moved outside the Beltway earlier this year, and more recently, Nguyen was operating a food truck parked outside the former Beaver’s.

Xin Chao marks Ha’s first standalone restaurant, and a chance for her to spread her wings beyond the nhau cuisine, which is meant to be eaten while drinking, that makes up most of the menu at The Blind Goat. At her new spot, Ha will serve up contemporary Vietnamese cuisine inspired by recipes passed down from both her family and Nguyen’s, with locally-sourced Gulf Coast ingredients. (Both chefs are second-generation Vietnamese-Americans.) The menu currently includes dishes like scallop crudo with Vietnamese herbs, spring rolls inspired by a combination of both chef’s mother’s recipes, and shareables like lemongrass buttermilk fried chicken.

In addition, the restaurant features cocktails, created by local cocktail consultant Linda Salinas and general manager Christopher Nguyen, meant to pair perfectly with Xin Chao’s cuisine. Drinks include the Dragon Highball Z, with Suntory Toki Japanese whiskey, Topo Chico, ginger, and grapefruit; and a version of the mojito with lemongrass and Thai basil.

For now, the restaurant is open Thursday through Monday for dinner only, starting at 5 P.M. Seating on the large patio is first come-first serve. Reservations are recommended for indoor seating. Call 832-740-4888 to book a time.

What They Said About Climate Last Night

What They Said About Climate Last Night https://legal-planet.org/2020/09/30/what-they-said-about-climate-last-night/

There was actually a substantive discussion of climate change at the debate last night. Many people had literally tuned out by then. Others were too distracted by Trump’s interruptions.  Here are the key things that were actually said, culled from a transcript of the debate.

Wallace:  . . . Mr. President, you said, I don’t think the science knows. Over your four years, you have pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Accord. You have rolled back a number of Obama Environmental records, what do you believe about the science of climate change and what will you do in the next four years to confront it?

* * *

Trump: . . .  I think a lot of things do, but I think to an extent, yes. I think to an extent, yes, but I also think we have to do better management of our forest. . . .

Wallace: But sir if you believe in the science of climate change, why have you rolled back the Obama Clean Power Plan which limited carbon emissions and power plants? Why have you relaxed…?

Trump: Because it was driving energy prices through the sky.

Biden: Why have you relaxed fuel economy standards that are going to create more pollution from cars and trucks?

Trump: Well, not really because what’s happening is the car is much less expensive and it’s a much safer car and you talk it about a tiny difference. . . .

Wallace: But in the case of California they have simply ignored that.

Trump: . . . . I’ve given big incentives for electric cars but what they’ve done in California is just crazy.

Wallace: All right, Vice president Biden. I’d like you to respond to the president’s climate change record but I also want to ask you about a concern [about the cost of Biden’s plan]. The president says a lot of these things would tank the economy and cost millions of jobs.

Biden:  . . .  Nobody’s going to build another coal fired plant in America. No one’s going to build another oil fire plant in America. They’re going to move to renewable energy. . . .  Making sure that we can do that, we’re going to put 500,000 charging stations in all of the highways that we’re going to be building in the future. We’re going to build a economy that in fact is going to provide for the ability of us to take 4 million buildings and make sure that they in fact are weatherized …

Biden: . . .  And the first thing I will do, I will rejoin the Paris Accord. . . .

Wallace: What about the argument that President Trump basically says, that you have to balance environmental interests and economic interests? And he’s drawn his line.

* * *

Trump: He’s talking about the Green New Deal. And it’s not 2 billion or 20 billion, as you said]. It’s $100 trillion.
Biden: I’m talking about the Biden plan.

* * *

Wallace:  [describes Biden’s plan] I think some people who support the president would say, that sounds like it’s going to cost a lot of money and hurt the economy.

Biden: What it’s going to do, it’s going to create thousands and millions of jobs. Good paying jobs.

Trump: . . . The Green New Deal is a hundred trillion dollars.

* * *

Biden: No, I don’t support the Green New Deal. . . . I support the Biden plan that I put forward.

So there you have it.  By far the biggest discussion of climate change we’ve ever had in a presidential debate. Too bad many people had stopped listening by then, or couldn’t follow it because of Trump’s constant interruptions.
