A group of local culinary professionals is raising money and collecting supplies to deliver to people impacted by the storm
A group of Houston chefs has teamed up to bring food and supplies to Texans and Louisianans affected by Hurricane Laura.
Chefs Jessica Timmons of Cherry Block Craft Butcher, Martin Weaver of Watever Fresh, Ben McPherson of BOH Pasta and more have launched a fundraiser to raise money and collect supplies to take to the Southern Texas-Louisiana border next week to feed people displaced by the storm and the emergency responders who are assisting victims on the ground.
The chefs, whose restaurants are all based out of Bravery Chef Hall, have already raised more than $8,000 of their $12,000 goal. They are also accepting donations of non-perishable food, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items at the food hall through this Sunday. Donations can be dropped off all weekend from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 409 Travis Street in Downtown Houston.
Timmons said that once it became clear that Houston would be out of Laura’s path, she and the other chefs got on a group chat together to figure out how they could help those affected. She viewed it as a way to give back to the many people who helped Houstonians after Harvey flooded the city almost exactly three years ago to the date.
“For us to be able to provide that support to another community — that’s what hospitality is,” she said.
Several other restaurants have joined the effort, including El Big Bad, Margeux Oyster Bar, Rudyards, Andes Cafe, who have all pledged to cook at least 2400 meals. Rainbow Lodge is also running a special in which the restaurant will donate $1 for every hibiscus margarita sold today to the Htown Meals for Hurricane Laura fundraiser.
Independent of the Htown Meals fundraiser, Chef Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen is also seeking volunteers in Beaumont as soon as possible to help prepare and deliver fresh meals to those impacted by Laura.
