Blue crab grilled cheese sandwiches and watermelon mezcal margaritas served in a waterfront space are definitely worth the drive from Houston

Houston’s newest destination for fresh Gulf oysters has finally arrived.

Pier 6 Seafood & Oyster House, at 113 6th Street in the bayside hamlet of San Leon, about 40 miles southeast of Houston, is the first restaurant from the family behind Prestige Oysters, one of the leading oyster distributors in the Texas Gulf. The restaurant’s head chef, Joe Cervantez, was previously the executive chef at Cajun institution Brennan’s. The restaurant opened on November 5.

Pier 6 offers waterfront dining and a “tide to table” menu, including fresh raw oysters plucked directly from Galveston Bay. Other dishes include redfish with chimichurri sauce, a blue crab grilled cheese sandwich, lobster rolls, pan seared grouper, and a ribeye served with blue crab potatoes au gratin and bearnaise sauce. The bar menu, created by Lori Harvey and Kris Sowell of Ladies of Libation, includes beachy cocktails like watermelon mezcal margaritas, seasonal mules, wine, and local beer.

“Being able to offer the fresh bounty that comes from the Gulf, to highlight the area, Prestige, and what we do, all while leveraging Joe’s expertise in the kitchen, it’s a dream,” said Pier 6 owner and Prestige Oysters president Raz Hailili. In the future, Halili hopes to eventually build a small oyster farm in the waters near Pier 6. With that addition, the restaurant could one day offer table-side oyster roasting, shucking classes, oyster harvesting in the bay, fishing tournaments and more. At present, Halili is still finishing construction on a dock that will allow guests to access the restaurant directly from the water.

Pier 6 is open from Tuesday through Thursday, 5 to 9 p.m., Friday, 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday, 3 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, 3 to 9 p.m. Lunch and brunch service will be rolled out once the Pier 6 staff gets their sea legs. Reservations can be made via OpenTable or by calling 281-339-1515.
